Project 3.0 environmentSURFACE

Playa del Carman from the Autodesk Area

Landscape representation primarily hinges on the expression of environment rather than the object. Environment is defined physically by the interrelationship of objects, surfaces, and atmospheric cues.

environment – the surroundings or conditions in which one operates

Using 3ds max to create the environment and define surfaces you will composite your model with a background image. This will involve adding materials to the model you created and composing a scene using one of the provided backdrops. You will create materials for the model, develop lighting for the environment, and create shadows and environmental cues that merge the background with the models. It will also be necessary to create shadow casting surfaces that represent the background image’s general form. The scene should visually address the following questions:

  • How do the materials define the quality of the surface and relate to the environment?
  • How does the environment relate to the model physically? (attachment to surface, program, circulation, etc)
  • What is the purpose of the model in the environment?

Background images will be posted on the server in the /resources/bg_images folder. Pick one of the backgrounds to use in your composite and develop materials, shadows, and lighting based on this background.

The final product will be assessed on creativity, clarity, attention to detail, and quality of craftsmanship.
