In reading about proxies for 3D trees and vegetation, is it possible to use proxies on 2D vegetation to save memory?

It is definitely possible to use proxies on 2d vegetation but typically 2d vegetation would be the proxy for something more complicated. You can't get much simpler than a plane or even two planes. The one thing you could do is to use a proxy without a highres image mapped to it in order to save memory.
