I haven't tried it yet, I'm in the middle of a render. If someone gets to it before I do, let me know how well it works.

Here's what I got after I tried:

This was using the pseudo color exposure control. Every other exposure setting gave me a light grey. Also think that I'm having trouble booleaning the spheres. If anyone else has tried this, please let me know if you got it to work.
Second attempt, trying to merge the tutorial link in the previous post with the tutorial from the Beginning to Advanced text, Ch. 18-10:11. Now I need to figure out how to do it reversed and I think I'll have it.

SUCCESS. Here's what it looks like:

Here's my set up. For thunderclouds, I think that all that would need to be done is to change the color of the background, change the color of the clouds, and then somehow animating the clouds. The last one I'm stumped as to how to do it. Here's my setup in case anyone wants to use it:

I grouped the hemispheres and the atmospheric helper with the volume fog together, positioned a camera 5'6" above the ground plane with its target 15' off the ground plane, and turned the group 10 degrees over 100 frames.

try animating the phase, this should give you the animation you are looking for...
Okay, after playing around with phasing, here's what I got:

The next step is to make the clouds coalesce or move in en mass, like a thunderstorm. Any ideas?
not sure how you get them to move en mass across the screen. The noise limits may help you here but I don't for sure.
