Where do I find the 'Object Properties' dialog box? I can't seem to find it in the Environmental/ Effects window under Rendering. Also, in the subsequent description of turning off the cast shadows of the backgrounds, do you make this happen on an object to object basis through the Modify panel of a lighting system, under the 'Shadow Parameters' rollout?

you can do this on a per object or per layer basis. Select an object and then right click in the viewport over the object, at the bottom of the context menu you will see object properties.
