In 3DsMAX when rendering from a view, how do you adjust the render settings to see only what you see?

I am getting 15% or so more around the perimeter of what I see in the viewport in the rendered out file making it difficult to set up controlled views.

I’ve put a plane in my scene and applied the matte/shadow/reflection material to the surface. The surface shows the reflection and shadows in the rendering but the alpha channel recognizes the plane as a solid surface and makes it impossible to extract just the shadow and reflection in photoshop (aka the alpha channel shows the plane as solid white). I tried restarting 3ds max and also deleting the plane and material and starting over. No success. Any other tricks?

I'm having trouble pulling up my TIF image correctly. I have my model placed in the scene how i want it and looking through my camera view i set up in 3dsmax. I've rendered it, selected the alpha channel and saved it as a TIF file. When i open the TIF file in photoshop and i pull up my layers tab i keep getting the single background image i saved in 3dsmax without the seperate rgb, and alpha channel. What am i doing wrong in this process? Thanks!

The diorama I rendered from Max is about 360MB. In order to reduce the size, we need to save the original as a smaller one with Quicktime, right? But it seems that I couldn't use "save as" unless it is Quicktime Pro. Is there any other way to reduce the file?

It's giving me the option to click Yes to continue or No. I don't wanna mess anything up by clicking YES, so could anybody help me out here? What does it mean by no assigned file?? Thanks.

I went to work on the touch-ups for the Copacabana assignment I did, but the program won't allow me to change my views or angles. I'm only able to move around the elevation view at the beginning of my street. I looked at the view ports section in the book thinking that I could find out why it won't let me move around all all angles, and I don't think that I'm in camera mode. I know that in the 2010 of 3Ds Max, there was the cube in the right-hand corner that allows quick view changes, which Brad had mentioned in class. The center button on my mouse isn't working either. Is there a way to change the versions of the program like you can now do with AutoCAD 2011? I might be able to figure it out if the setup is the way it used to be. Or if anyone else had that problem as well and knows how to possibly fix it? I was having issue with this project before, but this is a new problem that has appeared.

I am having trouble assigning the materials ID's properly, and I may be confused about the manner to do it. First, I attached all of the elements per step 181. I went to the Modify panel, under the elements sub-object group, and expanded the 'Polygon: Material ID' roll out. Here's where I had trouble. I can't seem to find direction in the tutorials or texts as to properly assign materials, if this is the correct place to do it. I had trouble selecting and isolating the individual elements of the object. Certain parts of the back pillows are unable to be selected, doing a Ctrl select. Also, I am not sure what order to select the objects and then assign a material ID #. Whenever I make a setting, it is easily undone or I am not able to retrieve the settings that I just made.

I watched the "Building a Multi-Sub Object Material" tutorial on lynda.com, but after attempting this method, I do not believe that this applies to what the text is calling for.

I have applied the modifiers to the 'Bldg-MainWall' object in the correct order, going from bottom to top, Extrude, Shell, and Edit Poly. For some reason, after I do the slice plane and shift from edge to polygon view, the slice plane or rather the edges created by the slice plane disappear. My best guess is that there is a step missing in between the modifiers in that the slice plane is not wrapping around the entire 'Bldg-MainWall' object. Any thoughts?

You can see the reveals in wireframe mode, but in smooth+highlights it is a solid form. There's a key step I'm missing, but clearly I don't know what it is.

I am finding myself reading through the text and understanding the material just fine. When I go to actually work through the text tutorials, I find myself slipping into a time sink. I do not want to fall behind; however, I don't want to miss out on key steps that will help me later on. It's hard to gauge how much of this is hang up is due to me re-learning 3dS Max, my slow speed of working through the material, or my laptop struggling to deal with all of the line work from the tutorial files. Is it more important to read through the material and do the tutorials that seem totally foreign to me or is it better to make sure that I can accomplish these key exercises first before I move on to the subsequent chapters?

I'm trying out the extrude modifier and it seems to work pretty easily, but it only moves the face. Does anyone know if you can extrude a face, keep the existing face where it is, while still creating depth? Also, when I do a test render, the back of the surfaces do not render. How do I get them to do so?

I am having trouble importing my 3D diagram from SketchUp into After Effects. I exported it as a .3Ds and object files and both have not worked. None of the options to import into AE match those that I can save my model into SketchUp. I was wondering if anyone has imported models from 3ds Max yet..or if you can only import animations. I read up online about this troubleshooting, but see that maybe you cannot actually import a 3D object into After Effects.
