In 3DsMAX when rendering from a view, how do you adjust the render settings to see only what you see?

I am getting 15% or so more around the perimeter of what I see in the viewport in the rendered out file making it difficult to set up controlled views.

I’ve put a plane in my scene and applied the matte/shadow/reflection material to the surface. The surface shows the reflection and shadows in the rendering but the alpha channel recognizes the plane as a solid surface and makes it impossible to extract just the shadow and reflection in photoshop (aka the alpha channel shows the plane as solid white). I tried restarting 3ds max and also deleting the plane and material and starting over. No success. Any other tricks?

I'm having trouble pulling up my TIF image correctly. I have my model placed in the scene how i want it and looking through my camera view i set up in 3dsmax. I've rendered it, selected the alpha channel and saved it as a TIF file. When i open the TIF file in photoshop and i pull up my layers tab i keep getting the single background image i saved in 3dsmax without the seperate rgb, and alpha channel. What am i doing wrong in this process? Thanks!

To add to what Natalie said, some objects don't have the attach option. Presumably you're working with editable poly's, which do. So after attaching them you can go into vertex mode and weld the vertices.

However, the weld will not work in some situations (whenever doing so would mean more than three polygons would share one vertex, I believe).

To attach vertices, you need to attach one object to the other, making them one object (they will still be separate entities). Command panel > Edit geometry > Attach > select object to attach.

It sounds like you just want the wire frame form of the object? Instead of deleting the structure, you can make a material that appears as the frame. In the material editor with a standard material, under shader basic parameters, check the box next to wire. Under Extended parameters, you can change the size of the wire.

The diorama I rendered from Max is about 360MB. In order to reduce the size, we need to save the original as a smaller one with Quicktime, right? But it seems that I couldn't use "save as" unless it is Quicktime Pro. Is there any other way to reduce the file?

Whatever images you use they will need to be at least as large as the final render resolution if they take up the entire frame. If they take up more than the frame, ie. overlap the frame, then they will need to be larger than the final render size.

In Rendering > Render setup, under "render output" you need to tell 3ds Max where to put the files you are rendering. Previously you've probably just been rendering one image at a time, so it will show you the image in the preview window. When rendering a sequence, you have to tell it to save the image else it will just pop up in the render window for a brief moment and then get thrown away.

Every time i click the Render Production button a pop-up window appears and says "You are rendering a sequence with no assigned file. Frames may be lost." It's been working fine recently and I don't really know what this means. It's giving me the option to click Yes to continue or No. I don't wanna mess anything up by clicking YES, so could anybody help me out here? What does it mean by no assigned file?? Thanks.

In other words, for me to make this work at best do i need to find a clever way to expand on my original image to at least fit this resolution of the diorama correctly?

Here's my set up. For thunderclouds, I think that all that would need to be done is to change the color of the background, change the color of the clouds, and then somehow animating the clouds. The last one I'm stumped as to how to do it. Here's my setup in case anyone wants to use it:

If you scale or rotate an object at the object level (not faces, verts, etc) reset xform will change the current value of rotate or scale back to 0 or 100%.

So for example if you scale a box up to 150%, when you click on reset xform it will make the new size 100%.

Hopefully that makes sense. I am not sure why you are getting the result where it shows the inside of the couch. That doesn't make a lot of sense.

I went to work on the touch-ups for the Copacabana assignment I did, but the program won't allow me to change my views or angles. I'm only able to move around the elevation view at the beginning of my street. I looked at the view ports section in the book thinking that I could find out why it won't let me move around all all angles, and I don't think that I'm in camera mode. I know that in the 2010 of 3Ds Max, there was the cube in the right-hand corner that allows quick view changes, which Brad had mentioned in class. The center button on my mouse isn't working either. Is there a way to change the versions of the program like you can now do with AutoCAD 2011? I might be able to figure it out if the setup is the way it used to be. Or if anyone else had that problem as well and knows how to possibly fix it? I was having issue with this project before, but this is a new problem that has appeared.

Thanks.

In ch6-25, step 184 it says with the model selected go to the UTILITIES panel, click the RESET XFORM button followed by the RESET SELECTION button. When I do this the front of the couch is deleted and only the inside of the couch is visible. What is the purpose for the XFORM button?

I don't have 3ds max in front of me but in older versions it on the final gather tab. It was just above the area where you specified the final gather map. This may have changed in 2011.

I cannot seem to locate the 'Read Only (FG Freeze)' lock option. There's a 'read only' that comes from a drop down menu under the Final Gather roll out of the Render Setup. Are these one in the same?
